Chalet Chair, Josef Kulon
A rare craftsman-made elm chalet chair, designed by Josef Kulon.
Made in Zakopane, Poland C1950s, this piece is brutalist in its design and solid in its construction. The chair is made in elm, with an angled seat and has a carved geometric design set within the scalloped shaped seat back.
Still with it’s original finish, the chair shows minimal wear, however has some marks aligned with it’s age. One peg is missing from the base, however the seat is still very sturdy and fully functional.
In the early 20th Century, the area of Zakopane became a hub of creativity, instrumental in crafting a modern Polish identity in both architecture and interior design. Known as "Zakopane Style", it used traditional artistic craftsmanship, combining folk with modernism, geometric forms and practical minimalism. This chair is a fantastic example of a piece from this area and time.
